In the United States, summer is a time to relax, connect with friends and family, and make lasting memories. Yet, while most people you know may be out of school, we remain focused on the millions of girls around the world who continue to study hard and work to achieve their dreams - both in and out of the classroom.

You can get involved by hosting your own summer-themed Girl Rising fundraiser and send the empowering message that your community stands for girls’ education year-round. With the extra free time and wonderfully warm weather, a summer event can be a lot of fun, too!

Earlier this season, rising tenth-graders Meera and Saira from Walt Whitman High School in Maryland decided to organize a “Dance & Dive” Zumba and pool party fundraiser to support Girl Rising India. Working with Sayva, a youth service organization in DC, the duo sold tickets, secured sponsors, and gathered support from many local businesses that donated prizes to raffle off at the event, which was held at a local swim and tennis club.

“The fundraiser was targeted towards teens because we wanted to get more teens active and involved and also help girls get an education like themselves,” Saira explained.

The day of the pool and Zumba parties, over 65 guests, including many of the girls’ friends from school, attended to swim, dance and donate to a great cause.

As Meera and Saira have shown, teaming up with your network is a great way to harness your individual time and talents for a broader cause. Overall, the organizers and Sayva together raised over $5,000 for Girl Rising India!

Looking to do your part to support girls’ education? All it takes is one person, and one idea, to get the ball rolling.

Here are just a few to help get you started!

  • Host a barbeque or cook-out in a nearby park. Make it pot-luck style or ask a local restaurant or caterer to donate food and spread the word about your cause.

  • Plan a fundraising field day at a recreation center, park, or school with warm-weather activities like cornhole, water balloons, and volleyball.

  • Work with a local recreation center, library or summer camp to host a Girl Rising screening, either indoors or under the stars.

  • Hold a car or bike-wash in a nearby parking lot or gas station.

  • Go old-school: Set up your own Girl Rising-themed lemonade stand or bake sale.

  • Decorate your own Girl Rising school supplies and sell them to your friends and family when it’s time to start back-to-school shopping. Or, host a drive to collect new or gently used school supplies to donate to an on-the-ground organization that assists in-need students within your own community.
