When you decide to advocate for the causes you believe in, everything you do – no matter how small – makes a difference.

This is the firm belief of Josh Lorschy, a 16-year old from Sydney, Australia, who utilizes his creativity and passion to achieve gender equality. He understands that tackling inequality and illiteracy is no small task, but is more than up for the challenge.

“What is important to me is that I am doing what I can with what I have,” says Josh. “I am part of a larger movement of fighters who are all working towards a common goal.”

And Josh is certainly doing a lot. Three years ago he and his family decided to fundraise for the organization Room to Read, which ignited his interest in the campaign for girls’ education. Ultimately, they raised $40,000 - enough to build two libraries in Cambodia. In 2013 Room to Read invited him to attend the United Nations Youth Conference in New York, where he had the amazing experience of hearing Malala Yousafzai speak and met 500 other young advocates for girls’ education.

After the conference, Josh became a Girl Rising Ambassador. He has spoken at a UN Women gathering in Sydney about the causes Girl Rising champions, and has held a day of awareness at his school in coordination with the International Day of the Girl. At this event he spoke about education equality, screened a portion of the Girl Rising film, and organized 200 boys to stand in the shape of a girl in a sign of solidarity.

“I am a huge believer in raising awareness – information is power so raising awareness is crucial,” says Josh. “You and I are capable of making a difference, and we must fight together.”

Josh is able to combine his passion for advocating for social justice with his creative skills. He has made a series of animated shorts championing different causes he believes in – marriage equality, access to freshwater, racial equality, and girls’ education.

“Gender equality is the missing link for sustainable progress and the best way to achieve this is through education,” says Josh. “Education inspires young minds, encourages innovation and allows children’s knowledge to flourish. It sets a structural basis of all aspects of life.”

Josh is interested in studying international law in college and has a dream to one day travel the world with a camera, creating visual content to share people’s stories. Currently, he and his friends are working towards raising $10,000 for Room to Read. They’ve raised $9,000 so far and hope to reach their goal by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, he’s always working on new animations.

When you love what you’re working towards, the job is never done.
