Most mother-daughter activity guidebooks include tips for handling shopping, not hosting screenings. Yet, when Holly Pavlika signed on to host a Girl Rising screening, she instantly knew she wanted to involve her daughter Kara. Kara, 18, didn’t always value education and had no plans on attending college until Holly shared facts with her family about education as the avenue for empowering women. One in three girls in developing countries will be a child bride before they reach Kara’s age.
Kara is now a student at Syracuse University studying Information Technology and on the night of their screening she will be standing beside her mother as Holly gives opening remarks on Girl Rising. The film has connected a community of women dedicated to advocating for girl’s education- around the world, in their community, in their own family.
